Tsunamis: How they are Formed To start things off, Tsunamis are not tidal waves, as people tend to belive they are the same thing. Tsunamis are in no way affected by the tides. They are formed by geological forces, like underwater earthquakes, landslides, and topside volcanic eruptions. Also, the very rare meteorite impact with the ocean can cause a tsunami to form. Most commonly, tsunamis are caused by an underwater earthquake. Below I will describe how a tsunami is formed, travels and finally, the inundation of dry land. How Tsunais Form, Travel, and Inundate the Land Tsunais start usually with an underwater earthquake. During the earthquake, the seafloor may drop or rise. Displacing the water column above, which produces a ripple effect like a pebble dropped in a pond. Think of the ripples as the tsunamis. It is believed that sea-surface displacement is the same as that on the oceanfloor. When the wave travels outward, the wave remains almost invisible on the surface. The wave is basically energy traveling through the water and the water is deep enough so the wave is unoticable. The wave length to water depth ratio (which determines when the wave will form. The closer the ratio, the more the wave is formed)is very far apart, so the wave remains unoticable. And because of the deep water, tsunamis can travel very fast; at a rate of 700 kilometers an hour, which allows the tsunami to travel very fast across an ocean. While tsunamis travel fast in deep water like in the middle of the ocean, they slow down at shore, due to the low water depth. But a tsunami's energy must remain constant, so as it slows down, it builds up in height, looking like a wave. They are capable of reaching heights of 10 to 30 meters. Tsunamis are capable of inundating or rushing inward on the land hundreds of meters inland. A tsunami is not only one wave, but several, each one more destructive than the preceeding wave. There can be up to 4 waves. They also have a very high erosion factor, stripping beaches of sand and vegitation.
Also, A Little Side Information In case you were wondering what "tsunami" meant, here's your answer. Tsunami is a japenese word meaning "harbor wave". They were named this because they advanced undetected, and formed and broke on the harbors, where big waves normally do not form. Also, the name, "seismic sea wave", the scientific term for a tsunami, is incorrect. It refers to tsunamis as only being formed by seismic events, like underwater earthquakes. But tsunamis can also be formed by non seismic events, like meteor impacts, or a landslide. The word tsunami covers all these types of generation. Finally, there may be 2 types of tsunami. A local tsunami, and a distant. Say an earthquake triggers a tsunami off the coast of California. The local tsunami would break on California. While the distant tsunami happens mainly on Hawaii. Typically, when a local tsunami is about to happen, the water recedes to feed the wave. Then the wave comes.

Tsunamis may reach heights of up to 30 meters, much bigger than the wave here. Tsunamis can also get this big, and they break inland, not at sea like this one
